A weekend in Bendigo

A two-day plan built around what is open on Saturday and Sunday

A weekend in Bendigo

For a weekend in Bendigo, spend Saturday in Rosalind Park and underground at Central Deborah Gold Mine, then take the Vintage Talking Tram to the Joss House (check its hours first) and Lake Weeroona. On Sunday, start at the Golden Dragon Museum when it opens at 9:30am, then see Bendigo Art Gallery's exhibitions at Bendigo Town Hall (check its opening days first) and finish at Sacred Heart Cathedral. Most of the central stops are within about a 10-minute walk of the Bendigo Visitor Centre (approximate).

How we chose

We built this plan around opening days and checked it against official sites, council and tourism pages and recent travel writing on 20 October 2026. Walking distances and times come from OpenStreetMap routing and are approximate. Several official sites, including Central Deborah, Bendigo Tramways and Bendigo Tourism, could not be loaded directly that day, so where you need times or prices we name the site to check. We have not named meal stops because we could not confirm their opening hours.

Before you go

This plan is for a Saturday and Sunday. The Depot Discovery Tour runs only on weekends, and the Golden Dragon Museum is closed on Mondays outside Victorian school holidays.

If you are coming by train, V/Line trains run to Bendigo from Southern Cross in Melbourne. Bendigo station is about 1.2 km, or a 16-minute walk, from the Visitor Centre (approximate).

Book the Mine Experience Tour at Central Deborah ahead, as the mine highly recommends reservations for underground tours, and check session times at central-deborah.com. We could not confirm Talking Tram running times, Joss House hours or the Art Gallery's opening days from the official pages, so check them at bendigotramways.com and bendigoregion.com.au.

For food, see our coffee guide and our guide to where to eat in Bendigo.

Saturday

Morning: Visitor Centre, Alexandra Fountain and Rosalind Park

Start at the Bendigo Visitor Centre on Pall Mall, in the old Post Office building. You can buy Talking Tram tickets there and ask about guided Sandhurst Gaol tours, which are booked through the Visitor Centre.

Walk about 280 m, roughly 4 minutes, to the Alexandra Fountain (approximate). It stands at Charing Cross, where View Street meets Pall Mall, opposite the main entrance to Rosalind Park.

Cross into Rosalind Park and walk about 308 m, roughly 4 minutes, to the Poppet Head area (approximate). The Poppet Head lookout is a former Garden Gully United mine headframe moved to Camp Hill in 1931, and as of October 2026 it is open to Level 1 only. The water feature inside the park is the Cascades. They were designed by William Vahland and built in 1880. As of October 2026 the fernery is closed, and the Conservatory is closed for restoration.

Late morning: Central Deborah Gold Mine

From the fountain it is about 1,092 m, or a 15-minute walk, to Central Deborah Gold Mine (approximate). The Mine Experience Tour takes 75 minutes and goes 61 metres underground, and children can join from age 3. Hard hats are worn underground, and the mine asks guests to arrive early. Afterwards, have a look around the surface area, with its vintage mining machinery, gold panning and museums.

With older children or more time, the Underground Adventure Tour takes about 2.5 hours and goes 85 metres down.

Lunch

Pick a spot from our guide to where to eat in Bendigo and check its hours first, as we have not verified a lunch stop on this route.

Afternoon: Talking Tram to the Joss House and Lake Weeroona

The Vintage Talking Tram starts at Central Deborah Gold Mine, so you can board it there. A tram ticket also covers entry to the mine's surface area. Ride to the Bendigo Joss House Temple, which was built by Chinese miners, is dedicated to Kwan Tai and is still used for worship. Its opening hours vary between listings, so check with Bendigo Tourism before you set out.

From the Joss House it is about 1,187 m, or a 16-minute walk, to Lake Weeroona, or you can stay on the tram (approximate). Lake Weeroona was commissioned in 1878. The council describes a circuit path for walking and cycling, lawns for picnics and a fully fenced playspace. Check what time the last tram runs at bendigotramways.com so you are not left at the lake.

Evening: a show

See what is on at Ulumbarra Theatre, which is built within the former Sandhurst Gaol, or at The Capital.

Sunday

Morning: Golden Dragon Museum

The Golden Dragon Museum at 1-11 Bridge Street is about 445 m, or a 6-minute walk, from the Visitor Centre (approximate). It opens at 9:30am, Tuesday to Sunday, and last entry is at 4:30pm. Its permanent display includes Sun Loong, roughly 100 metres long, and Loong, described as the oldest imperial dragon. The Yi Yuan Gardens and Guan Yin Temple are open 9:30am to 4:30pm, Tuesday to Sunday. The museum's site lists group prices only, so check individual tickets at goldendragonmuseum.org.

If your group loves trams, swap the museum for the Depot Discovery Tour, which runs on weekends at 10:30am and 12:30pm, as of October 2026.

Midday: Rosalind Park or FunLoong

If you skipped Rosalind Park on Saturday, it is about 488 m, or a 7-minute walk, from the museum to the Poppet Head area (approximate). With children, try FunLoong, a dragon-themed playspace in Hargreaves Mall. It is about 300 m from the Visitor Centre (approximate).

For lunch, use our guide to where to eat in Bendigo, or find a coffee in our coffee guide.

As of October 2026, Bendigo Art Gallery is showing its exhibitions at Bendigo Town Hall, 189-193 Hargreaves Street, about 314 m or a 4-minute walk from the Visitor Centre (approximate). Its View Street building has been closed since 1 December 2025 and is expected to reopen in early 2028. Check exhibition days, times and ticket prices at bendigoregion.com.au before you plan around it.

Late afternoon: Sacred Heart Cathedral

Sacred Heart Cathedral on Wattle Street is about 774 m, or a 10-minute walk, from the Visitor Centre (approximate). We could not find visiting hours, so check with the Diocese of Sandhurst at sandhurst.catholic.org.au.

Swaps and add-ons

If it rains

Swap Saturday's outdoor stops for the Discovery Science and Technology Centre at 7 Railway Place. It is open 10am to 4pm Tuesday to Sunday in school term and every day in school holidays, and closed for all of February. As of October 2026, adult general entry is $22. It is about 340 m from Bendigo station, which suits a train home, and about 960 m, or a 13-minute walk, from the Visitor Centre (approximate).

With a car

The Great Stupa of Universal Compassion is a large Buddhist stupa in ironbark forest north-west of Bendigo. Opening times and entry details conflict between listings, so read stupa.org.au first.

Bendigo Pottery at Epsom, described as Australia's oldest working pottery workshop, is about 6.6 km, or a 9-minute drive, from the Visitor Centre (approximate). Listings disagree on its hours, so check its page on bendigoregion.com.au.
